👉 Your Ledger Nano S still works, and the Ledger Nano S Plus remains fully supported. The Nano S had an incredible run, it was officially retired in 2022. Since then, we’ve been gradually phasing out its full support. 🧵
Launched in 2016, the Ledger Nano S helped define self-custody when BTC was just for HODLing. But nearly a decade later, as crypto and its use cases evolve, so must the hardware that secures it, so we’ve updated our products to meet today’s needs.
Why the transition? Memory is its primary constraint. Initially robust, the rapid growth of blockchains means the Ledger Nano S can't support new applications, feature submissions, or app updates. The LedgerOS, Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Exchange apps alone nearly fill its 320kb memory, leaving very little room for anything else.
This memory limitation prevents the Ledger Nano S from supporting many newer features and essential security enhancements, including: - Multiple apps simultaneously - Latest and future Clear Signing improvements (which enhance clarity and security for transactions) - Transaction Check and Ledger Sync™ - Features like swaps (e.g., with THORChain, Uniswap, TON, ADA, NEAR, AVAX, DOT) - Device Language Packs
These newer features are crucial for improving clarity, usability, and, most importantly, security in today's complex crypto landscape. Ensuring they work as intended requires more capable hardware, which is why we've shifted our focus to devices that can support them.
Still using a Ledger Nano S? ✅ You don’t need to move your crypto ✅ Your 24-word phrase = your wallet ✅ Your wallet remains portable and in your control. You can restore it at any time on a new Ledger or any BIP39-compatible device 👉If your Ledger Nano S powers on and your 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase is safely backed up, your assets remain secure and accessible.
