We talk about hosting shortages like they're a real estate issue, and they are, but they're also a transportation issue. Cramming the masses into cities wouldn't be such a necessity if our trains ran faster. But Americans have lost faith in their ability to build great transit, especially trains. Projects drag on forever and burn through cash. In New York, the 2nd Avenue subway cost more than $2 billion per mile, and California's been trying to build a high-speed rail line between San Francisco and Los Angeles since 2008, at a cost that's now going to be more than $130 billion (and there are still no trains running). That's why we're so stuck with YIMBY / NIMBY debates.
