I know someone who was flown out for an in-person interview for a faculty position at UC Berkeley around 2020. Some universities require finalists to give what’s called a “chalk talk” about their research after the more general job talk. A chalk talk is a much more intimate meeting with faculty, in which candidates walk through their research proposal in detail and field their expert questions. It can take several hours. Every university does this slightly differently, and it’s often one of the more stressful parts of the interview to prepare for. At UC Berkeley, in addition to requiring finalists to give a chalk talk on their research, candidates were also required to give a separate chalk talk detailing their commitment to advancing DEI at the university.
