When Elon walked into my office in 2010, this is why I immediately liked him.
This is why I invested in every company he started from that moment forward:
He’s been space obsessed since childhood.
He put his own money on the line before approaching investors.
He knew where he was headed and was willing to sleep on factory floors to get there.
He wasn’t asking for permission to go to space… He was letting investors know that he was headed in that direction and asked if they’d like a ride.
Investors want to see a deep personal connection to the problem, a proven ability to execute in that domain and a clear vision while remaining flexible on tactics.

“Safe” bets are actually risky bets to me.
Safe = Consensus
Consensus = Obvious, not a big enough stretch. Consensus will be done by the big companies before a startup is able to build its market.
There was an era when everyone loved traditional brokers. That was the ‘safe’ investment. So I invested in @RobinhoodApp.
When no US car company had succeeded for 50 years, I invested in @Tesla.
When self-driving cars was unthinkable, I invested in Cruise (acquired by General Motors ( @GM )).
When traditional media was still the norm, I invested in @Twitch.
And of course… when the U.S. dollar is the “pinnacle of stability,” I went all in on @Bitcoin.
If everyone agrees with your investment choices… you're already too late.

I’m not a contrarian investor.
Contrarian implies that there’s is a dissenting voice.
I look for companies that are so exciting and innovative that there is no dissenting voice.
When you're investing in something truly new, you might be challenging the status quo, but mostly you are just seeing where this new path leads.
The status quo is a drag on progress.

-Detroit automakers missed electric vehicles. To catch up… they need to make them fly. I said to a large audience of auto industry execs: "You missed electric vehicles, so you better make them fly." For the most part, they ignored me.

I do not like the label @Bitcoin maximalist.
I'm an innovation maximalist.
Bitcoin is incredible. It’s transparent, keeps perfect records, immutable, transparent, global, accepted everywhere and has a 63% market share in crypto.
One thing people don’t focus on is that Bitcoin is a tool that allows for innovation.
Bitcoin is about investing in a great future where:
• Artists get paid instantly for their work
• Small businesses access global markets without banks
• Creators own their audiences directly without having to pay platforms 30%
• Innovation moves at the speed of code, not committees
Innovation/Progress is the goal.

Here’s a 2-flag filter that will save you from 90% of bad investments.
🚩 Red Flag No. 1: Too obvious, too easy
100+ competitors. If you can Google up 100 companies doing a similar thing then it’s too easy to build.
Someone will do it cheaper and it’s a race to the bottom.
🚩 Red Flag No. 2: Regulations
I've watched the SEC kill startups because they "might someday look like an exchange."
When regulators try to solve problems that don't exist yet, innovation dies.
Entrepreneurs should have more freedom in the sandbox and regulators can always step in later, when there’s an actual reason to step in.

My son beat me to the best investment of the decade.
@Brian_Armstrong walks into my office to pitch @Coinbase.
My son, @AdamDraper was there and we love the pitch and love Brian.
I want in immediately, but I'd already invested in @CoinLab (a startup with a similar premise).
So… I passed on the seed round. Oops.
My son didn't have that conflict and invested in Coinbase's first round at a very good price.
I finally got in at the growth round, and then our fund joined at pre-IPO.
Both were great successes, but my son’s returns solidly beat my own.
Good to see that each generation gets better than the one before.
