Needless to say, today’s Ukrainian parliament vote is a gift of historic proportions to Russian propaganda, and to everyone in the West who opposes further military aid for Ukraine’s just war against the Russian invasion.

Protesters in Kyiv today chant “veto the law,” urging Zelensky not to sign the abruptly passed legislation that dismantles Ukraine’s independent anti-corruption bodies.

Ukraine lost its independence in the past because of strife and division at home. The sudden law to dismantle independent anti-corruption bodies, if signed by Zelensky, has the potential to spark the country’s first political crisis since the war began — and to prompt some Ukrainians who closed ranks behind Zelensky when Putin or Trump questioned his legitimacy to change their minds, at one of the most perilous moments in the war.

This decision is truly, unbelievably, mind-bogglingly stupid. It happens at the worst possible time given the recent positive shifts in US policy. This gifts a strong narrative to bad actors.

There haven’t been any anti-Zelensky protests since the Russian full-scale invasion of 2022, as the Ukrainian society realized that to survive it must stay united. Today’s move, unless reversed, is likely to change that. Soldiers on the front are particularly infuriated.

Seriously concerned over today’s vote in the Rada. The dismantling of key safeguards protecting NABU’s independence is a serious step back. Independent bodies like NABU & SAPO, are essential for 🇺🇦’s EU path. Rule of Law remains in the very center of EU accession negotiations.

It’s no exaggeration that Ukrainian public opinion is in an absolute firestorm after the parliament today approved a law essentially dismantling independent anti-corruption agencies, just days after SBU raided key investigators. The law isn’t enacted until Zelensky signs it — and there is huge pressure from within Ukraine and from the EU on him not to do so. Watch this space.

Incredible that among Hungarians, Russia, which sent tanks to Budapest twice in the 20th century, and Ukraine, which just wants to be left alone, are almost tied as the perceived main threat. Orban’s anti-Ukrainian propaganda really seems to have worked.
