.@CashApp revealed at @TheBitcoinConf that they are getting 9% yield via routing on their Bitcoin lightning node.⚡️ This revelation caused us to look into our own situation (TLDR, 3.5%). Thread 🧵 👇

2/ Together, our two nodes collected 1.9M sats (~2k USD) in routing fees last month. That corresponds to ~3.5% annual yield on our local balance. Higher than we would have guessed! Earning fees from routing is of course not our core business, but this investigation has made us realize that maybe it deserves another look. Might we be able to optimize further and get even higher? 🤔

3/ It’s worth noting that the flow on our node (as a merchant constantly having sats flow into us) is perhaps fundamentally different from Cashapp’s node (a wallet and money transfer). What are the ramifications of a merchant node type vs a wallet node type? Honestly we can’t really tell… maybe some lightning network experts can let us know?
