The Australian political, economic and legal system has been set up to personally torture me as a 26 year old young person:
- $24,000 fine for holding blank sign outside Chinese Consulate
- Wallet stolen, $1000 taken off my bank cards, police say they can do nothing
- $900 a week rent. I got rejected from 70 seperate rental accomodations before I finally found my place which is located more than one hour drive from the central business district with barely any public transport nearby. Forced to move far away from family because I could not find anything. Rental vacancy rate in my city of Brisbane is less than 1% due to infinity mass migration and NIMBY Boomer housing restrictions. My landlord is an absentee foreign owner.
- Extremely high taxes on young people. I pay 30% tax on the equivalent of $60,000 USD a year, plus HECS for student debt, plus 10% GST consumption tax on every single thing I buy, plus 50 cent tax per litre of fuel which I have no choice but to go with because it is literally impossible to get around my city without a car. All these taxes just slug young people while extremely asset rich boomers get tax credits for their investment properties and franking credits from stock dividends.
- The median home price in my city of Brisbane is $1 million AUD ($657,000 USD). Ten times the median income which is worse than London in terms of affordability. So none of us will ever be able to afford our own homes. We will rent our entire lives.
Just a borderline catastrophic political-economic situation. Australia is set up as an extremely crushing Boomer aristocracy. I can see why so many young people want to leave.
