SquiggleDAO has SOLD Chromie Squiggle #1458 to @ToledoMuseum 🎉🎉🎉
The Toledo Museum of Art, founded in 1901, houses an impressive array of artwork, including pieces from renowned artists like Van Gogh, Monet, and Rembrandt, as well as exceptional glass art that reflects Toledo’s history as the "Glass City." The museum also stands out as one of the few institutions actively collecting digital art, embracing the evolving landscape of contemporary creativity. By acquiring works that incorporate digital techniques, blockchain technology, and generative algorithms, the museum acknowledges the growing significance of digital media in artistic expression.
This acquisition is significant for several reasons:
🌈 Squiggle #1458 is the first public acquisition by a museum from the secondary market. It was purchased onchain, with royalties paid. This forward-thinking approach not only preserves groundbreaking works for future generations but also reinforces the museum’s commitment to innovation. It ensures the museum remains a leader in the global art conversation.
🌈 The Ghost Squiggle’s form is ideally suited for transformation into physical sculptures. Given the Toledo Museum’s expertise in glass artistry, this acquisition is a perfect match.
🌈 This marks the first time a DAO has sold a piece of art to a museum. SquiggleDAO continues to lead the collector DAO space, with the hope that other DAOs, Web3 companies, and institutions will follow suit.
🌈 This particular piece is a Ghost Squiggle, one of just 20 in existence, the second Ghost ever minted, and one of the most prized works in the DAO’s collection. Ghosts are Ribbed Squiggles with a segment color between 252 and 255, inclusive. They are called Ghosts because they are nearly invisible. “Perfect Whites” fully blend into the background, meaning 255. We’re honored that this rare piece will now become part of the Toledo Museum’s permanent collection.
🌈 Squiggle #1458 was also featured as the centerpiece of our 2024 Glitch Marfa event, where heat-sensitive mugs revealed the Squiggle when exposed to heat and were showcased on billboards around New York City. We’ve provided 50 of these mugs to the museum for their current exhibition, Infinite Images: The Art of Algorithms.
