The EU recognises the Sami people as the only indigenous people of Europe. The Sami are believed to have entered Scandinavia from Russia about 2,000 years ago. The Bell Beaker people that settled Ireland and have remained largely unchanged since, arrived about 3,000 years ago. Sardinians have been largely unchanged since the settlement of their island by Early European Farmers, about 6,000 years ago. Why are the Sami indigenous but not the Irish or Sardinians?
