when i was leading marketing and comms at @BuildOnCyber, one of the messaging that used to really stick with people on the ground was "Uber for social media." in the US and Canada, almost every Uber driver you meet has a day job and they drive uber in the evenings to make some extra cash. A ton of them sometimes don't even care about the money as much, they just do it cuz they like it and the cash is a plus. I would explain decentralized social networks as uber for social in that, the economics of these networks could be changed so you could come and post and engage and make some extra cash while doing so. You don't have to do it, but if you're going to post photos and opinions on social media, you could do it here because you also make some money. Who would pay? Well the advertisers and the platform! Right now, we give X and Meta our data, they package that and basically 'sell' it to the advertisers, who in return pay to show ads to us. Well in a decentralized social network, when you own your data, the platform can pay you a share for accessing your data to do their thing. it feels nice hearing from jesse
