Of the 10 most valuable companies in the world, 7 employ more software engineers than any other role (NVIDIA, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Google, Meta), 2 are hardware (Broadcom, TSMC) and 1 is oil (Saudi Aramco).
Getting into 7/10 of these is "easiest" as a software eng.

Prediction: a year from now, US computer science departments will find their enrollment at 50% of what they have been the past few years. I'm willing to bet a peppercorn on it for someone who really wants to hold me to it. (-:
... and getting into 2/10 is "easiest" as a hardware engineer.
I would expect enrollments to top universities (from where all the above companies and other Big Tech & many scaleups almost exclusively recruit interns + new grads) to not taper off the next few years... at all
Enrollment to universities that have no industry connections, no internship pipelines etc and where new grads struggle to get hired from: they will always struggle if this keeps up for long.
Don't have enough data to see if things are bad in sw engineering vs other industries
