Many people’s meritocracy ideal is something like: ability is randomly assigned at birth, the best rise to the top. Half of people in this society would be downwardly mobile, some of them a lot. They would tear each apart in a generation.

Hierarchy and inequality are not the problem; we have always had them. It's loss of belief in safe ways to get ahead. Tearing down hierarchy and inequality can make things worse; hierarchical unequal systems can offer people the most reliable positive sum life expectations. /N
We are lucky in our society that ability and parent status are correlated. It’s unfair but we couldn’t have meritocracy at all without it.
