The discomfort about sex differences, which "stem from a sentimental belief that nature ought to support progressive political ideals... has given rise to new categories like 'demisexual'—a term used mostly by young women who experience sexual attraction only after forming an emotional bond. In essence, it reframes a traditional romantic norm. But in a culture where emotional commitment and monogamy are often dismissed or pathologized, some young women feel compelled to invent a new sexual orientation simply to legitimize their natural preference for commitment."
