Meanwhile, a thoughtful, conservative Israeli journalist whom I admire told me recently, Yes, the starvation is real. People, often Americans, who callously respond, “Tell Hamas to surrender,” “it’s all fake,” etc. — it’s classic ideological disavowal; it rests on a deeper knowledge that what they’re seeing is real, immoral, and unjustifiable, and they have to do violence to their own minds and consciences in order to suppress this inner awareness.
