In 1990 DC had a life expectancy at birth of 67.3, which is roughly on par with Tanzania, Sudan, Pakistan, and Gambia today. It was dead last among the states. Now it's up to 79.0, which is in the middle of the pack.
I'm not saying America is perfect but we genuinely have made strides since. Black men in DC gained about 14 years of life expectancy!
The disparities were truly wild. The average life expectancy for a white woman was 81.3, for a black man 57.2 Part of it was gentrification but life expectancy went up the most for those at the bottom.
