In web3, lots of things come and go and the only way you survive is to believe in things and then make sure you align yourself with that belief. I've done that with a lot of fantastic artists and communities and never been disappointed when taking that approach. For a long time, I've had a belief in the power of the blockchain for public history, connection, and provenance. Memories and narratives fade, but the blockchain is immutable and permanent. For that reason, OG collections like Cryptopunks, one of the early pioneers to collectibles on the blockchain, are so revered. I absolutely love Cryptopunks, but I have a soft spot and a belief in the predecessors of the official Cryptopunks. The V1 Cryptopunks aren't official and were even denounced by their creator. However, on the blockchain, you can see they were minted first as Larva Labs Cryptopunks and the ones that were "free to claim". Yes, there was a bug in their marketplace functionality. Given they were ERC20 tokens and couldn't be resold another way, Larva Labs decided to fix the problem by airdropping a replacement and pointing these to the same IPFS image as the first Punks. These airdropped Cryptopunks became the official Punks and the originals faded away. Since tokens can't be erased, V1 Cryptopunks live on and for years are able to be wrapped and transacted on any marketplace. Many don't know the history of the two versions of Punks and so V1s trade lightly. I now own four Cryptopunks V1s and am happy to own the original Punks, even if they are not the official Cryptopunks. I love the history of both V1s and V2s. Both have a wonderful story in crypto and I hope continued success for both. Here's my strategic reserve of Cryptopunk V1s.
