🧵 The Magic Behind Monero: Simple Explainer for Normal People
1) What makes Monero private?
Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, where your transactions are public, Monero hides everything — sender, receiver, and amount. It uses black magic like RingCT, Stealth Addresses, and Ring Signatures. 👇🏼

2) Let’s start with addresses.
Monero wallets use two key pairs:
- View key — lets you see what comes in
- Spend key — lets you send
Every payment is sent to a one-time stealth address, so even if you reuse a wallet, nobody can link your transactions.
3) How do Ring Signatures work?
When you spend XMR, your real input is hidden among fake decoys.
No one not even a chain analyst can tell which input is real.
Monero uses CLSAG, a fast, compact, and privacy-strong upgrade.
4) What about amounts?
Even if sender and receiver are hidden, what stops someone from seeing how much was sent?
That’s what RingCT solves. It uses Pedersen Commitments to prove the math works without ever showing numbers.
5) Wait — how can the network check if you're cheating?
Pedersen Commitments are clever:
- They’re binding (you can’t lie about the value)
- And homomorphic (you can prove that inputs = outputs + fees)
No amounts ever need to be revealed.
6) Bulletproofs keep it honest.
To make sure no one sends negative coins or infinite ones, Monero adds Bulletproofs — short cryptographic proofs that prove all values are in valid ranges, without leaking the actual amounts.
7) The Monero recipe:
- Stealth address for the receiver
- Ring signatures for inputs (CLSAG)
- Pedersen Commitments for amounts
- Bulletproofs to prove range
- All wrapped in a private transaction, confirmed in ~2 minutes
8) Default privacy. Always.
There’s no “enable private mode” in Monero.
No optional mixer.
No custom settings.
Everyone gets the same strong privacy — every block, every user.
9) Why does this matter?
Monero protects:
✅ Sender
✅ Receiver
✅ Amount
✅ Balance
✅ Transaction history
It’s not perfect but no other chain hides all this by default.
10) But what if the miners are the threat?
Monero doesn’t just need strong cryptography — it needs a strong security budget. That’s what funds hashrate and keeps attackers at bay.
Right now, Monero’s total daily miner reward is ~$150K.
That means attackers like Qubic can rent a majority of the network’s hashpower for as little as $7K/day.
Even a short takeover can break core assumptions:
- Ring signatures become traceable
- Decoy selection can be manipulated
- Private transactions become easier to deanonymize
RingCT hides amounts but if one party controls most blocks, they can distort the mix.
Your privacy might statistically fail, even if the math stays unbroken.
11) So why are people worried?
Recently, an experiment called @Qubic gained attention.
It started offering extra rewards to miners, pulling hashpower away from Monero’s core pools. For a few hours, they got close to 30% of the network.
If they ever reach 51% even briefly the practical guarantees of privacy could start to fall apart:
- Decoy selection may be biased
- Transaction patterns become linkable
- Network-level surveillance gets easier
Monero’s cryptography remains strong but the assumption of neutral mining begins to crack.
Qubic isn’t an exploit. It’s not even an attack — yet.
It’s an economic test.
And it’s shaken the Monero community.
We don’t know how far it’ll go.
But we now know: privacy depends on more than code — it depends on who runs the network.
12) What can we do?
Monero doesn’t need panic — it needs usage.
Every real transaction brings more fees, strengthens incentives for honest mining, and reinforces decentralization.
- Use Monero
- Accept Monero
- Talk about Monero
Activity = defense.
13) Monero is the closest thing we have to true digital cash.
It’s powered by cryptography but protected by people: users, miners, and community values.
If we don’t use it, we lose it.
🧱 Privacy isn’t magic
👥 Decentralization isn’t automatic
🧠 Spread awareness, not fear
💸 Spend privately. Use Monero.
