Is Chase going to be the only bank charging for API access? I put that question to @BLaw's Evan Weinberger on the @FintechTakes podcast. Short answer: Unlikely. Longer answer: Just ask PNC’s CEO, who gave Chase a standing ovation on an earnings call and said they’re “considering it.” That's basically a yes. This is how it always starts. One bank goes first. The other penguins crowd at the cliff shoving off one penguin to see if there are seals down there. Meanwhile, the CFPB (the one regulator who could meaningfully shape what comes next) has exited stage left. It asked the court to vacate its own open banking rule, but regulators are now admitting: “We didn’t think the fees would be this high.” Cool. Great. Everything’s fine.
