Update for folks: Following a very large (M 8.7) and relatively shallow undersea subduction zone quake in the West Pacific east of Kamchatka, Russia, there is a considerable threat of a damaging basin-wide #tsunami. For late-breaking details, visit:
As of ~6pm Pacific Time on Jul 29, 2025, Tsunami *Warnings* are in effect for portions of West Pacific close to epicenter as well as Alaska and Hawaii. A #Tsunami Watch is also in effect for entire U.S./Canada West Coast, including all of coastal California.
There are preliminary reports of large, damaging tsunami waves near the epicenter on Kamchatka. This suggests that a tsunami of some magnitude has, indeed, been generated. Also, quake magnitude, location, and type suggest a considerable threat.
In terms of threat to California specifically: The threat is still being evaluated, but is potentially significant (hence the Watch). The first waves would not arrive in California until around midnight Pacific Time, however, so there's plenty of time to react if needed.
However, with Tsunami Watch in effect, this is not be a good evening to visit the beach or other low-lying coastal spots within 10-15 feet of sea level. If a warning is issued for CA, that will signal the need for localized evacuations of coastal/low lying areas. (TBD for now.)
