Today in AI, we find ourselves at a crossroads similar to the early days of the Internet. The internet was instantiated through shared open standards and infrastructure. While much of the economic value generated by the internet has since been captured by a number of large corporations, it is because of this foundational openness that society has been able to benefit from a decentralized source of information flow. As we transition from the Information Age into the Intelligence Age, we once again face a similar choice. AI is rapidly becoming humanity’s outsourced cognition, yet today it remains largely controlled by a small number of centralized entities. This is inherently dangerous, not necessarily due to current actors' intentions, but because centralized control over something as fundamental as intelligence inevitably poses risks related to bias, misuse, monopolization, surveillance, and the erosion of intellectual freedom. Building viable and competitive decentralized alternatives to centralized AI is therefore not just beneficial, but essential for humanity’s future autonomy and well-being. Fortunately, now that there are viable means of expressing value on the internet (with blockchains/crypto), it is possible to build a fully decentralized AI stack that avoids capture by centralized entities. My hope is that what we're building at @AlloraNetwork meaningfully contributes to this decentralized vision for AI. But even more importantly, we must collectively ensure this decentralized ecosystem can evolve quickly enough and maintain the core values of openness and autonomy before the gap with centralized AI becomes insurmountable.
