Jamie Lee Curtis says re: Colbert’s firing: “They’re trying to silence people, but that won’t work. It won’t work. We will just get louder.” That’s not what’s happening at all. They’re cancelling the whole show, not axing Colbert as a host. There’s no silencing. CBS realized they didn’t want to subsidize a show that was losing $50M a year and they realized the late night talk show format is a dying medium replaced by internet influencers and short form. If the show was making money CBS would have kept it. They have nothing against Colbert. It’s the same reason why ABC will never cancel The View. It’s too profitable. Those voices will never be silenced (as long as they’re making money.) There’s no censorship here, that’s disingenuous. Would not be surprised if the other late night shows are next. That format has proven objectively to be not profitable anymore nor the trend of where things are heading.
TLDR: The efficacy of the propaganda arm of late night isn’t worth the $50M subsidization anymore. They realize Internet/influencers are more effective at literally a fraction of the cost. The show as a show isn’t strong enough to stand on its own, so the entire thing gets axed.
