some random thoughts from someone who worked on the AI research team at tinder back in the day (yes they have one): 1. the algo for match group apps (tinder, hinge, etc.) is actually quite good, it's based off of co-swipe groups (embeddings) — follows your swipe patterns vs explicit filters (pictures, text, etc.) which is much more effective. essentially collab filtering (netflix recs) 2. this kid is a genius marketer 3. dating apps have a hard time reconciling lop-sided match patterns (generally men swipe right on everyone/selective with chats, generally women have inverse behavior since they are selective upfront). 4. ultimately tinder/match group accepted that they can't control what happens post "match" (i.e. once users convert off app to snapchat, text, etc.) and that they're primarily top of funnel companies, which is fine because tinder gold makes an ungodly amount of money 5. which means that the "hardest" part of dating apps can be boiled down to two things 1) having swipe-rightable profiles (profile optimization) and 2) having good "game" in chat to convert off-app (which requires taste and understanding current pop culture meta and AI definitively does not understand either)
