The Social Security Administration is officially ending paper checks on September 30. If you're one of the 740,000 recipients still getting your payments by mail, you’ll need to switch to electronic payments before that deadline to avoid delays.
This change is part of the government's broader push to modernize and secure how benefits are delivered. The SSA cites three main reasons: speed, security, and cost. Electronic payments arrive faster, are far less likely to be lost or stolen, and save the government money.
There are two ways to make the switch. You can opt for direct deposit into a bank account, which is the most common method. Or, if you don’t have a bank account, you can use the Direct Express card, a government-backed prepaid debit card that gives you access to your benefits without needing a checking or savings account.
If you’re affected, the SSA will notify you by mail with clear instructions. You can also enroll at or by contacting them directly. Don’t wait until the last minute. Missing the deadline could disrupt your benefits.
Take action now and make sure your payments continue without interruption.
