When I was a kid, I used to go to the MLB All-Star Game each year with my dad. I’d find out which hotel the players were staying at (because all the autograph seekers would be gathered outside the lobby). Due to security rules, you weren’t allowed to ask for autographs in the lobby, which is why everyone waited outside. So I’d go into the hotel, not ask anyone for an autograph in the lobby, and make my way to a random floor, rookie cards of each All-Star alphabetized in one pocket, blue Sharpie in my left, and hang out by the elevators. I’d tap both the up and down buttons so every elevator would stop on my floor. If a player was inside, I’d hop in and ask for an autograph (no one ever said no to a kid one-on-one). If no player was in it and it was going down, I’d say “Going up?” and let the doors close. I was able to get signed rookie cards of pretty much everyone you could imagine: Jeter, A-Rod, Ichiro, Pujols, etc. No one else ever got an autograph at the hotel.
