Unpopular opinion: Some people deserve a good beating. I don’t say this in a vengeful or petty way, but a practical way. Being beaten is a humbling experience and can re-wire even the worst offenders. Some people are just plain horrible and are immune to jail or fines as a corrective measure for bad behavior. There’s something primal in our DNA about a physical beating and wanting to avoid this. It works especially well on the very stupid and most horrible people. Rewire the brain. The viral videos of the guy stealing cigarettes with impunity who is then beaten by Sikh shopkeepers and the more recent video of the UK subway guy who punched a man and knocked down a baby then was beaten by the crowd are great examples. As a low government / pro liberty person the idea of the government having the power to beat people is horrifying. However the current system of wrist slaps and revolving door jails are expensive, destructive and ineffective. One beating will reform certain people more than a year or more in jail. Prisons cost taxpayers $30k+ per prisoner per year. People in jail tend to adjust and over time the punishment becomes less corrective. Also it removes their ability to contribute to society and the economy. Prisons remove fathers from raising kids and massively increase the chances of those kids also turning to crime. A system like Singapore that issues caning under careful medical guidance allows people to take a harsh and effective punishment that has a higher chance of actually changing behavior and allowing people to return to society and be productive. If the victims and offenders agree, why not have this as an option?
