7 business lessons from @Peter_J_Beck (Founder of Rocket Lab): (1) To raise capital, you have to be a good storyteller: Even if your product is very scientific (like rockets), you can’t just present a thesis and expect to sway investors. (2) The riskier the company, the less of it you should own: You need a lot of investment and talent to succeed. (3) “Business is a lot like a game of chess” – Sir Peter Beck: You’ll spend a long time positioning (with some moves being useless) before you make an impactful move. (4) You’ll never get your dream job with just a resume: Resume delivery is important (one guy showed up to RocketLab from Canada and stayed in the parking lot until they gave him a job). What you do in your spare time shows your drive and your passions: (They should be relevant to the job you’re pursuing.) (5) Lean on the vision: Peter advises that when his employees have a bad day, they go down and stroke the rocket (no inappropriately – lol). They then remember that they are a part of something that is going to space, which not many people can say. (6) Mistakes are stepping stones: Even if it doesn’t feel like it in the moment, learning from small mistakes can prevent you from making a bigger mistake down the line. (7) Trust your people: If it were up to Peter, he probably wouldn’t have done this podcast. But the people in his corner encouraged him to go for it — and he’s glad he did.
