Airdrops are an ROI disaster. But they don’t have to be.
The problem with most airdrops is that they try to reward everyone, when the hard truth is that airdrop participants are not created equal.
By setting up an airdrop mechanic that filters participants, it's possible to launch an airdrop with good CPRW: the metric we use internally that measures cost per retained wallet beyond the 30-day mark.
A real-life case study in doing it right:
An airdrop distributed 7.5% of token supply to 12,400 wallets using a 2% daily compound multiplier. This produced a sharp separation between participants:
• 89% of >10x users retained at TGE
• 47.4% still active 90 days later
• Mid-tier farmers (4–8x) churned 67.7%
• Wallet splitting dropped token capture from 73.8% to 63.3%
The result was a clean U-shaped retention curve.
You can see how high-commitment users stayed while mid-tier mercentaries dropped, since the design mechanics made partial commitment irrational.
