I was asked by Politico to comment on the new DOE climate report (since it cites my work). The reporter (@bstorrow) did a good job condensing my hour of rambling to four succinct sound bites.
But I also posted my notes to S*bst*ck, for the full detail and nuance of what I said (both links below).
tl;dr: I will not comment on the parts of the report that are not related to my expertise (climate sensitivity, global greening, attribution, etc.). On the parts where I do have some expertise (scenarios, economics), I think the report makes some valid points (and it cites my work accurately), though in some areas it draws stronger conclusions than I would.
Most of all, I think this report illustrates why it would be great to have an actual National Climate Assessment (as is required by law)!
If the Trump administration thinks that previous assessments have left out dissenting voices/viewpoints/evidence, then they have a golden opportunity to bring a diversity of views/participants/evidence together in an adversarial collaboration! That might actually bridge the divide and lower the temperature.
